‘Napolitano described these policies as smart. Nothing could be further from the truth’
WASHINGTON – The Obama administration is making federal immigration agents “the enemy,” the president of the union of Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers told a Senate panel Wednesday.
“It is clear that federal officers are the enemy and not the law breakers,” Chris Cane, president of the National ICE Council, said in a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on immigration reform.
He said Washington has limited the laws agents can enforce, put limits on their authority and imposed unreasonable rules on their actions.
Cane pointed to illegal aliens driving without licenses as one of the leading causes of death in America, costing 700 lives a month.
“ICE agents cannot arrest illegal aliens without a license unless they have previously been arrested for something else,” he said.
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano has described these policies as smart, he noted, but “nothing could be further from the truth.”
He said morale is at an all-time low, because the Obama administration has “excluded ICE agents from input on immigration reform.”
Sen. Jeff Session, R-Ala., asked Cane if the president or anyone in the administration asked for his input on how to improve immigration law.
No, he replied.
“In fact, they put out lists bragging” about special interests lobbying on the issue, he said.
As a result of White House policy, ICE “is not able or properly prepared to perform its mission,” he said.
